Why

School Garden?

“The ultimate goal of nutrition education is to move students toward eating patterns that promote personal health, social justice, and ecological sustainability of the planet.” (Koch, 2016 p. 57)

This website (full pdf document included in resources) aims to address some of the concerns and questions educators might have as they begin to take on the rewarding challenge of building a sustainable garden in their school community.

Imagine if every school in the province of Manitoba had some form of outdoor learning classroom which could include a sustainable garden. The research supporting these kinds of innovative educational experiences is abundant but it’s not always easy to know how to begin.

“Education is more meaningful as it revolves around real-world, project based learning and reinforces the development of an entrepreneurial mindset”. (O’Brien, 2016 p. 170)

Our current and still rather traditional education model has most students seated in rows or groups learning content inside the classroom for a good portion of the school day. While many teachers have been successful in implementing New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, there is still a need to go further. One of the challenges teachers face is resources to help with the questions that inevitably arise when attempting to do something new, like building an outdoor garden.

Please tour the website for an outline of some challenges you may encounter as well as some simple solutions and resources easily accessed in the province of Manitoba.
