Planning Notes

The following lessons/activities are appropriate for grades 7 and 8. They can also be easily adapted to other grade levels if necessary.

Materials

Laptops, chart paper, notebooks, pencils, blocks, the BLM printouts, a projector, whiteboard, whiteboard markers.

Learning Skills & Work Habits

Group works skills, organization, ability to search online, curiosity.

Recommended Class Time

The first two lessons may be done over the course of 2-3 classes. The project at the end of the 3rd lesson is slightly open-ended and could take from 1 week to 3 weeks depending on the depth of the project.

Prior Learning

Students are already somewhat familiar with ecosystems through the teaching of Science at the grade 7 level. At this point, students are aware of the location of Lake Winnipeg, have explored the surrounding area on maps and have discussed some of the plants and animals that are located in and around the lake.
